Defensive DAWGS

In a basketball era obsessed with highlight dunks and deep three-pointers, two high school athletes are proving that the loudest plays aren’t always made on offense. Sometimes the real game changers are the ones who make opponents think twice before even dribbling their way.

A defensive dawg isn’t just a good defender, it’s a mentality. It’s the player who takes pride in shutting someone down, who treats every defensive possession like a personal challenge. A defensive dawg dives for loose balls, fights through screens, talks nonstop on switches, and never backs down from guarding the other team’s best player. They don’t wait for energy to happen.

This week I am highlighting Monterey boys varsity players Larry Galloway and Christopher Owens. I had the pleasure of watching them play during Monterey’s 77-72 victory over Abilene Wylie. What stood out to me the most was their relentless effort. Watching plays like Larry flying in the air to block a shot or even Chris sacrificing his body to dive for a ball on multiple occasions. They truly embody everything I see as a “defensive DAWG.”

The Monterey Plainsmen are currently 6-2 Overall and have displayed great determination and skill thus far this season. They are definitely a team to keep an eye on as we inch closer and closer to the start of district play.
